(Reviewed 5/26/10) Many of the recorders currently on the market are VHS to DVD Recorder models. DVD is still out ahead when it comes to archiving home video so this is really no surprise. Panasonic has two models that are in essence the same - the DMR-EA38VK (no tuner made for recording from an external source like a cable or satellite box) and the DMR-EZ48VK (has a built-in analog and digital TV tuner).
This DVD Recorder has the standard four recording modes: highest-quality XP fits 1 hour of video on a DVD; SP fits 2 hours; LP fits 4 hours; and EP, the worst video quality, fits about 8 hours of video. The trade-offs in video quality versus capacity can be drastic: XP is nearly indistinguishable from the source, while EP is barely watchable.
The remote on this DVD/VCR Combo is well-designed and identical to previous models. The buttons are large enough to differentiate, including the most important ones: Direct Navigator, Schedule, and Functions. The remote lacks an Open/Close button, which is a flaw.

The DMR-EZ48VK includes both an SD memory card slot and USB terminal for viewing photos off a camera or streaming music from a USB device. This VHS to DVD recorder has technology for up-conversion of SD format data to 1920 x 1080p video format to provide HD image quality.
It also features Panasonic's VIERALink technology for easy connection and synchronization with a VIERA flat-panel HDTV and offers a variety ports including an HDMI output.
It's simple to make a recording with this DVD recorder. All you need to do is load a disc, pick which input you want, choose either DVD or VHS, press the "Record" button, and then press the "Stop" button when you're finished. Oh, one other thing, like VHS recorders you'll need to remember to turn off the DVD recorder before your scheduled program comes on.
Also like any VHS recorder you'll need to delve a bit deeper (you really didn't think there's be no learning curve right) to schedule or edit recordings. Your time would be well invested since you'll get to know your DVD recorder.
This Panasonic VHS to DVD Recorder won't burn you pocket book and should reliably preserve any VHS recordings for years to come. It's not easy to find a reliable DVD/VCR combo recorder so if you're interested Amazon has the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK VHS to DVD Recorder at a decent price.
There is another version of this DVD Recorder. It comes with an HDMI cable. If you're really interested in this machine here's another article for further depth. It's the Panasonic DMR-EZ485VK.
