Does the Samsung DVD-VR330 Make a Decent VHS to DVD Copy ?

(Reviewed 1/11/06) Want to make a VHS to DVD copy? Then the DVD-VR330, Samsung’s new DVD/VCR combo unit, may prove a useful addition to your home theater system. It will also allow you to copy or record from a camcorder and play your video back on a DVD.

This unit was designed especially for those of you that have a VHS tape library that needs to be transferred to DVD. We know that there are still plenty of you out there with vast VHS libraries.

Let us start with the VHS to DVD copy abilities of the Samsung DVD-VR330. You can transfer video from VHS to DVD directly by using the “TO DVD” button.

If you do this, the transfer process starts immediately. However, if you want to edit the video you have to start the VHS to DVD copy process from the on-screen menu. Once there you can set start and stop points and also create recording lists.

Using “recording lists” you can make a VHS to DVD copy. The Samsung DVD-VR330 can transfer video to VHS as well. Also, you have to remember that the Samsung DVD-VR330 cannot record copy protected VHS tapes.

Apart from VHS tapes, the Samsung DVD-VR330 can record on other various types of media: DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD+R discs. The quality of the recording on VHS tapes or on DVDs is excellent. As a DVD recorder the Samsung DVD-VR330 has four recording modes (from 1 to 6 hours).

After choosing the mode just hit the “Record” on the remote and it will make a VHS to DVD copy. The unit can play a wide range of media, as well (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD, CD-R and CD-RW discs).

The design of the Samsung DVD-VR330 is simple and elegant considering it’s a two-deck unit. On the front panel you’ll find some necessary buttons to control the two decks in case you lose the remote. The remote control is easy to use.

It has some dedicated buttons that are useful. You can record on DVD or on VHS tapes using “quick recording”, it begins recording immediately after pressing the button.

The Samsung DVD-VR330 has the usual set of connections: R/F input and output, one S-video output, one S-video input, one composite video/audio output, one component video etc. You can also connect a camcorder to the deck (FireWire input).

The VCR deck works even if you only connect the DVD section of the Samsung DVD-VR330 through the S-video and a coaxial digital cable.

Conclusion: The Samsung DVD-VR330 is a useful addition if you have old VHS tapes that you want to transfer on DVD. The unit can make a VHS to DVD copy with no loss in video quality, it is compatible with various types of recordable media and offers the possibility of connecting a camcorder. The interface of the unit is intuitive and the menu is easy to navigate through.
