The Magnavox ZV427MG9 VHS DVD Recorder: Ideal for Transferring Home Made Movies

The Magnavox ZV427MG9 VHS DVD recorder comes with a 4-head Hi-Fi VCR. The unit features 1080p up-conversion and two-way dubbing which allows you to record VHS tapes to DVD or DVD to VHS. The model comes with progressive scan capability and satellite link recording feature. This DVD recorder also allows you to record up to six hours in five different speeds. The machine fulfills its primary purpose for people who wish to copy VCR tapes to DVD and preserve them for the long haul.

This recorder offers good picture quality and allows you to put titles on your recordings as well as edit them. You can connect your video camera directly to it and easily record onto a DVD. This VHS DVD recorder can play VD, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R and CD-RW and record on VD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW formats.

The Magnavox ZV427MG9 DVD recorder is adaptable to most TVs except models that are old - say around ten years or more. This is one of those DVD recorders that come without a tuner (no "antenna in", "antenna out" ports) and has to be used with a cable box or set-top box. The unit also doesn’t have a RF coaxial cable input so if you want to record cable or satellite TV signals you’ll need to use the component or composite cables.

The recorder’s DVD chapter editing features let’s you record a program and edit the various chapter markers before finalizing the disk. The chapters are automatically added as per the settings selected by you. A noteworthy function on this machine (due to its up-scaling ability) is that the picture quality in the recorded DVD is much better than that of the original VHS. You’ll need to buy a HDMI cable for High Definition viewing. This Magnavox model is 4 inches high, 17.2 inches wide and 10.3 deep.

Unfortunately the recorder does not have the feature that allows you to record one program while watching another. There’s no provision to record different TV channels so you can only record the channel you are tuned in to. You’ll need to manually change the channel if you want to record different programs.

If you are used to the traditional VCR with multiple channel recording settings the Magnavox machine may not be for you. Like all other DVD recorders this VHS DVD recorder won’t allow you to record copy righted material.

The recording quality in the four and six hour modes is not good. This is not a surprise and is fairly common on DVD recorders. The 2.5 hour recording mode however is perfect for recording films that run for more than two hours. DVDs recorded on this machine may not play on other machines. Magnavox’s customer service acknowledges that they could not guarantee that the disk copied on this machine would work on other DVD recorders or players.

You should know that it does take a little time to load discs into this machine. Additionally we’ve seen some user complaints that this VHS DVD recorder changed the aspect ratio format on their TV from 16:9 to 4:3 which required them to manually change it back.

Conclusion : The Magnavox ZV42MG9 DVD recorder is good option for people who have lots of old VHS tapes. The machine is good for people who wish to convert their old VHS into DVDs and store them for a long time. It offers good picture quality with superb editing functions. It plays and records onto a variety of formats. It has a nice up-scaling feature that sharpens your old VHS tapes.

On the negative side: there's no built in tuner so your program recording is severely limited, there are some documented user complaints that may be isolated cases but cannot be completely dismissed.

The machine fulfills its primary purpose for people who wish to copy VCR tapes to DVD and preserve them. It’s not for the videophile who wants all the bells and whistles that allow them to program their favorite TV shows or watch a DVD while the machine’s recording other content.
