Is This Samsung DVD Recorder Worth Buying?

(Reviewed 8/30/06) The Samsung DVD-TR520 is a dual deck Samsung DVD recorder. The novelty of this DVD recorder is that it comes with two DVD drives which means that you can copy video from one DVD to another. On the right is the read-only drive, while on the left is for recording. It is useful if you want to make quick copies of your recordings for you friends and family.

The unit can record on DVD-R/-RW/-RAM formats. When it comes to playback the Samsung DVD-TR520 is compatible with: DVD/-R/-RW/-RAM, CD/CD-R/-RW discs. You cannot copy a DVD-RAM on a standard disc because it won’t fit on it. The Samsung DVD-TR520 cannot copy dual layer discs or discs that are copy-protected. The dubbing process is quick and the quality of the copies is very good.

One thing that might annoy users is that you have to change drives if you want to make a copy of a just-recorded program. You need to put the DVD in the read-only drive and insert a blank DVD in the other drive. The disc dubbing process can be started either by pushing the copy button on the remote or from the on-screen menu.

There are some useful options that make this Samsung DVD recorder a good home-theater addition. There’s the flexible recording length feature. This enables you to maximize the quality of your recording by completely filling the DVD. Another nice feature of the Samsung DVD-TR520 is that it can do two things at the same time: you can record using one deck, while watching a DVD on the other.

The Samsung DVD-TR520 has many editing options to choose from. For example, you can remove parts of a recording by marking the start and the end points or you can join or split chapters etc. Editing out some parts of a recording, commercials for example, is only possible with DVD-Ram and DVD-RW discs. This Samsung DVD recorder doesn’t let you schedule your recordings automatically.

The connectivity of Samsung DVD-TR520 is solid: S-video output, 2 video inputs, 1 component video output, digital coaxial and optical audio outputs, analog video outputs and inputs. However, what makes this Samsung DVD recorder better is the DV input which allows you to connect a camcorder.

The remote is easy to use, and the buttons are logically displayed and easy to navigate by touch but it has an annoying feature. In order to reach certain functions you need to use the Anykey button instead of the Menu button.

Conclusion :The Samsung DVD-TR520 has something new to offer: the possibility to copy video from one DVD to another. If you need to backup alot of DVDs then this Samsung DVD recorder is for you.
