If you want a high-quality DVD recorder, you may want to consider purchasing a Pioneer-DVR-633H-S . This DVD recorder has a HDD capacity of 160 Gb.

(Reviewed 11/1/06) The Pioneer-DVR-633H-S can record both on DVD discs and on the 80 Gb hard disc. The unit stands out because it can record on dual-layer DVD-R discs (which have a 9 Gb capacity). As a result you can store twice as much video on a standard 4.5 DVD disc. It can also record on DVD-R/WR discs but it is not compatible with DVD+R/WR and DVD-RAM formats.

The Pioneer-DVR-633H-S has various recording modes: XP, SP, LP, EP, SLP, and SEP and an extra XP+ mode that offers exceptional video quality. The video quality in XP and SP modes is excellent then it drops gradually until SEP mode becomes almost unwatchable. You can record at maximum quality by completely filling a DVD (other brands call this feature flexible recording). The ‘chase playback” option is also available so you can watch the beginning of a program, even if the end is still being recorded.

The Pioneer-DVR-633H-S comes equipped with an IR blaster and an Electronic Programming Guide. The EPG enables you to schedule the programs you want to record. The EPG can be easily installed, if you follow the instructions and it offers various recording options such as: weekly recording of a program, reminders for when a program is about to start etc. Using the EPG’s recording options you can also establish different recording speeds for your programs.

Editing video with this Pioneer DVR is also pretty easy. You can change the names of the titles, delete sections of them etc. On the hard drive you have even more editing options. You can first edit the video on the HDD and then copy it on DVD discs. You can also skip commercials using the commercial skip button on the remote. Unlike other DVD recorders, the Pioneer DVR-633H-S can adjust the number of seconds you want to skip.

The Pioneer DVR has an excellent dubbing-speed. Using the High Speed Copy mode you can dub a 2 hour movie in about 15 minutes. It can also archive movies very quickly. You can copy a movie on HDD, and then dub it on a DVD disc in about 28 minutes. You cannot archive or dub DVDs that are copy-protected.

The connectivity of Pioneer DVR is solid. The unit has 2 S-Video inputs and outputs, the necessary RF ports and an optical digital output. Unfortunately, it does not have a coaxial digital output. For a camcorder connection the Pioneer DVR-633H-S has all the necessary inputs (which include a FireWire port and S-video input).

The Pioneer DVR is stylish. On the front panel are many useful buttons that can be used in lieu of the remote. The remote has many buttons so it takes a while to become familiar with it. Most functions have their own dedicated buttons. The Pioneer-DVR-633H-S user interface is intuitive. A wizard will guide you through the installation process. At the bottom of the screen you can read messages that help you use the DVR.
