Is the DMR-EZ485VK One The Best Panasonic DVD VHS Recorders?
(Reviewed 8/27/10) Panasonic DVD VHS recorders like the Panasonic DMR-EZ485VK are far from your run-of-the-mill inexpensive way to dub VHS tapes of yesterday to today’s popular, more robust DVD format. In fact, this combination VHS/DVD recorder and player uses three types of media storage format, including VHS and DVD with a built-in and very convenient internal hard drive to boot. This set-up can more than likely replace your current Tivo Series 2 DTs if you have one, costing as much as a three year subscription.
What’s more, the Panasonic DMR-EZ485VK DVD VHS recorder offers more features than the aforementioned beloved Tivo, including HDMI upscaling, dual-layer DVD recording, and free on-screen TV Guide to make it easier to find and record your favorite programs all without additional subscriptions.
Unfortunately, despite its superb value, this model’s HDMI upscaling fails to deliver in quality and often experiences incompatibility problems with some brand recordable media discs. These, thankfully, are minor quibbles to an overall excellent package. The Panasonic DMR-EZ485VK DVD VHS recorder will more than likely satisfy the needs and wants of a majority of home theater enthusiasts with its flexible multi-functionality and unsurpassed video quality, particularly its efficient recording power. Moreover, you can even edit videos on the spot, which many Tivos and Tivo-powered DVD recorders just do not offer.
We admit the model is fairly bare-bones compared to other DVD recorders, having chosen a more minimalist aesthetic (and depending on your particular taste) that has thrown out all the clutter. Because it does house a DVD and VHS deck plus an LED display, the unit is slightly larger than your standard DVD player. The controls are seamless, allowing for one touch dubs between VHS to DVD.
The included remote is pretty well-built and laid out, giving you complete control over the three main devices (VHS, DVD, and hard drive).
