(Reviewed 8/30/06) The JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder combines the typical options of a DVD recorder with the advantages of a 160GB hard drive. It has good recording and editing options with a camcorder connection. This JVC DVD recorder has a stylish design but a crowded remote that's difficult to use.
The 160 GB capacity allows you to store up to 300 hours of video in the lowest quality mode. When recording on hard disc the DVD recorder allows you to watch another video recording. The JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder has a useful option called “Live memory” which automatically records the selected program so you can rewind it (by up to 3 hours) and save it on the HDD.
In order to take advantage of this feature you’ll need to leave the DVD recorder on with the proper channel selected. To edit the video you need to access the Navigator menu. Here you can give titles to your recordings, store up to 200 recording and organize them in 15 categories using an alphabetical search. The DVD recorder will not allow you to partially delete a recording stored on HDD.
The JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder has four recording modes to store video on DVDs ranging from one hour (in the highest quality mode) to eight hours (in the lowest quality mode). If you want to maximize the quality of your recording you can specify the exact length of the video and the unit will record it at maximum quality by completely filling the DVD. You can dub any material you want from HDD to DVD provided it is not copy protected.
You can divide long HDD recordings to fit them on a standard DVD. The maximum dubbing speed from HDD to DVD is 32X. The compatibility of JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder could have been better; it only records on DVD-RAM, DVD-RW and the DVD-R formats. The JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder has an option that enables you to transfer finalized DVDs to hard disc but the process takes longer and it cannot be executed at high speed. The DVD recorder performs well as a DVD player.
The JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder’s set of connections: an s-video output, an s-video input, a composite video input, coaxial and optical digital video outputs and a component output. There isn’t much to complain about when it comes to this recorder’s connectivity. Still, it would have been better if it had RGB Scart input. The lack of this restricts the quality of DVD recordings. You will appreciate the DV input which allows you to connect to camcorder.
This smart looking silver DVD recorder weighs about 6 Kg. The front panel is simply designed with only a few necessary buttons in case you lose the remote. The remote is too crowded with buttons and it will take a while to get used to it.
Conclusion :The JVC DR MH200S DVD recorder is nicely designed, has various useful recording options and can make some quality recordings. All things considered the recorder is a good option for the less-demanding users who need to store their favorite programs on HDD or DVDs.
