The AR-230 is a Gateway DVD recorder
that is a bottom of the line machine. It is aimed at entry-level consumers looking to replace their old VCRs.
Unlike more-expensive models, the Gateway's main selling point is its affordable price tag. If you're looking for an cheap way to archive VHS tapes and camcorder videos, the AR-230 does the job. But those looking for more-flexible TV-recording options should look at some of the rival DVD recorders that have slightly higher price tags.
Of course, the Gateway DVD recorder ‘s pricing means no built-in hard disk (unlike the Pioneer DVR-810H and Panasonic DMR-E100H). There’s no EPG either. Those with an off-air antenna or analog cable can use the built-in tuner to manually set as many as five recordings at a time.
Four recording options are available: HQ (one hour), SP (two hours), EP (four hours), and SLP (six hours). A longer recording time means lower video quality. The Gateway DVD recorder records to DVD+R/RW discs, which are slightly less compatible than DVD-R/RW discs, but play back on most DVD players
Although the Gateway’s recordings in the 1-hour and 2-hour modes provide video quality that is far beyond that of any VCR, the AR-230's video playback quality is still below average. Those looking for optimal video quality will want to record from the S-Video or FireWire input using either of the top two model
The back panel of the AR-230 has the standard DVD outputs, including progressive-scan component jacks and both optical and coaxial digital audio outputs. For the inputs there's a stereo A/V connection with composite or S-Video available. Additionally, an RF input and output allows a direct cable or antenna connection, as well as output connectivity with all but the oldest TVs.
The remote is OK. It has the standard DVD-transport and setup controls and keys for switching channels on the AR-230's internal tuner. The Gateway DVD recorder ‘s functions are limited to the DVD recorder so you'll need a separate remote for your TV and satellite/cable tuner.
The recorded discs have few customization options. Menus are bland. Program titles can be edited but are limited to eight characters. This Gateway DVD recorder isn't even an attractive piece of electronic equipment. Overall unless you can find the Gateway DVD recorder for a real bargain, I’d stay away from this DVD recorder.
