Toshiba RD-XS34

Considering a Combo DVD Player Recorder? See If This One's For You

Toshiba has stepped up to become one of the main players in the DVD player recorder field. Philips, Pioneers and the Pannies were my old faves but hey we’re allowed to be fickle. Toshibas are generally easier to use and offer a top quality build with reasonable prices so competition gives us the right to change our mind!

They have DVD recorders with hard drives such as the Toshiba RD-XS34 digital video recorder review here and the Toshiba RD-XS32 digital video recorder review here. These are fine DVD recorders and stack up well against any recorders with hard drives that are around today. Their pricing, for me one of the most important considerations, is extremely reasonable.

This popular manufacturer also have several DVD/VCR Combo players to choose from. Two that come to mind are the Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder review here and the Toshiba DVR670 DVD/VHS Recorder review here. Toshiba makes it easy to pick from their product line.

If you’ve read our other DVD/VCR Combo DVD player recorder reviews you’d know that one of the top ranked units in this category is by Toshiba. While offering stripped down features (in my opinion it comes with the features that you really need) this DVD recorder provides the same quality product for less than half the price. In the interest of saving you time and money check out Amazon - they have one of this companies top DVD player recorders - the Toshiba DR420 It is one of their better products and here’s why.

There are too many home entertainment options available to you today and what’s best for you can be confusing. KISS (keep it simple stupid) is usually what works best for me. The best solutions are the simplest ones. The Toshiba DR420 DVD player recorder will be that solution for many people. DVRs get all of the attention for recording TV programming but a DVD recorder can be a good alternative. You can save programming on a disc for transportation to friends or you can create a library without eating up all the valuable DVR real estate.

You can put entire seasons of your favorite shows onto a DVD but you’ll always have it. DVDs are cheap today so there’s no reason not to consider this. Would you really want to use up all your DVR space when you have this option? I have three DVD recorders and I can tell you that’s where DVD recorders excel. The Toshiba DR420 makes recording programs simple. Pick your station then press the record button and voila you’re done!

Other machines like the Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder review here and the Toshiba DVR670 DVD/VHS Recorder review here are great platforms for dubbing existing VHS video tapes to DVDs. A VHS or another DVD player can be connected to the DVD recorder’s RCA or S-Video inputs. Recording is a matter of selecting the input source and pressing record. The front panel DV input is a simple way to connect camcorder recordings for DVD recording.

If you already have a VHS player and want to save those family moments to DVD the Toshiba DR420 is the DVD player recorder that's the KISS solution. If you have a library of VHS tapes and want to archive them with some cool editing capabilities and more features then use the Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder or the Toshiba DVR670 DVD/VHS Recorder?

The Toshiba DR420 DVD Recorder Player doesn’t have a tuner for recording incoming TV signals and requires a cable box, satellite box or a digital converter box connection. If you need a tuner check out the Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder which is identical but adds a tuner.

The Toshiba DR420 DVD player recorder has a unique finalization process by using Auto Finalization. You won’t need to remember to do this typically manual process. Finalization enables a DVD to be usable on DVD players or recorders. As a bonus feature this DVD recorder let’s you undo the finalization. If a disc has been finalized and you want to record more material you can undo the process. Pretty neat!

What’s becoming a standard feature with DVD players today is their ability to up convert standard DVD content to almost high definition 1080p via the HDMI interface. This DVD recorder has five recording modes. XP is best and will record an hour of content to DVD. Recording time can be doubled to two hours with the SP mode with little quality loss. It also has LP, EP and SLP modes that gives you four, six and eight hours of recording time. Of course you’ll get quality degradation which for me renders some modes unwatchable.

Conclusion The Toshiba DR420 DVD player recorder is one of the best options if you want to make DVD copies of your VHS library. You’d better do this soon before VHS goes the way of the 8 track! You can also record from other DVDs to make a library of your favorite television shows. It has up converting capability and like most new DVD recorders will make standard DVD content almost like high definition when watched on a HDTV. Aside from the lack of fancy features (although it does have some well-appreciated features like chasing playback, time-slip recording and commercial skip) the biggest negative is this DVD recorder’s lack of a built-in tuner.
