When you not learning how to make a DVD copy and just want to watch the latest DVD releases with the least amount of hassle a DVD club is the way to go. Netflix is my choice. I use the $19.99/month plan which gives me a rotation of three DVDs of my choosing.
They mail them to you (first class) and provide a SASE to send them back in. Your first thought should be: "Hey, what about the turnaround time!" I know mine was.
I'm happy to say that when I'm finished watching a flick I drop it off at my local mailbox in the morning on the way to work and within 2 days I'm e-mailed by Netflix that they've received and are sending the next DVD from my request queue. They tell me when to expect it, generally two days from the e-mail, and 90% of the time it arrives the next day! I'm truly impressed with this service. Netflix will be around for a long time. Once you try it they'll hook you. Netflix is too darn convenient.
At one time I too was a cable subscriber. Ugh. I paid $76/month to get an arrogant service provider, poor programming choices, unreceptive support and reshuffling of my channels. Eventually I had had enough. Like Peter Finch in the movie "Network" one day I told my wife and kids; "I'm not going to take it any more!"
I researched both Dish
and DIRECT TV. At the time DIRECT TV offered a great installation package. First I called my cable service to try to work out a better price or get more premium channels from them. That went no where. I cancelled and called DIRECT TV. They gave me four receiver boxes and installed the dich on my roof for $69.99. My new programming package cost me $59.99/month. They periodically run a FREE install/FREE modem package so wait them out and go for the freebie or unless your like me and so disgusted with cable that you just have to change right away :)
It gave me more programming, a much more informative remote (with little movie reviews), several channels of commercial free music. The picture, of course, is DVD quality.
In the final analysis would you rather learn how to copy DVD CDs on your DVD burner from cable signal or from a HDTV satellite source? My brother has a DISH system. After he switched from cable he too couldn't be happier. His experience mirrors mine.
One major quirk about DISH network is they don't have a football sports package. If that's important stick with DIRECT TV.
Find out why DIRECTV beats cable One of the small pleasures of having my satellite service is that my old cable provider CALLS ME trying to get their long time customer back.
