The Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder might be the premier machine today.

Panasonic DMR E85 dvd recorder
Panasonic DMR E85 (Reviewed 10/14/04) The Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder is their top-of-the line, fifth-generation machine. It has a 120 GB hard drive that stores up to 284 hours. That’s about 11 straight days--of video programming in EP mode. Of course this DVD recorder has the hallmark time-shifted TV viewing abilities that Panasonic is famous for. This DVD recorder allows you to archive your home movies to long-lasting DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs.

The DMR E85 is a fine machine but it is not the only DVD recorder worth investigating.

More about the Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder

The Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder is also a progressive-scan DVD player for use with standard, high-definition or HD-ready TVs. This DVD recorder plays DVDs, CDs, and homemade MP3 discs, as well as high-resolution DVD-Audio discs.

The Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder plays DVD-RAM and DVD-R, generally regarded as the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats. DVD-RAM offers high storage capacity, high-speed data transmission, exceptional picture and sound quality, fast random-access memory, and rewritability up to 100,000 times. You can program the recorder the same as s you would a VCR. To simplify programming, the DMR-E85 includes the TV Guide On Screen Electronic Programming Guide..

The Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder offers one touch recording. This DVD recorder will allow you to burn a one-hour program to DVD-RAM in just 5 minutes, or to DVD-R in just 2.5 minutes.

Panasonic's Time Slip feature lets you use your DVD recorder like a digital video recorder, or DVR. This machine allows you to view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the program in progress. This Panny has a feature called Relief Recording. It automatically checks the remaining disc space when recording to DVD-RAM or DVD-R. If there's not enough space, the video recorder shifts the balance of the recording to the hard drive.

Direct Navigator is a feature that simplifies previewing recorded programs. It lets you access recorded material from an onscreen menu that lists recording dates, times, channels, and titles. I've always been a big believer in Consumer Reports magazine and generally follow their recommendations. They're always looking out for you the consumer.

In the Dec/04 issue (pp.18-19) Consumer Reports has this to say about buying electronics at Amazon. "In our survey, no retailer received topmarks across the board for price, selection, and service. Amazon.com did receive top marks in the categories in which it was rated-the only outlet to do so.....Consumer Reports readers gave Amazon.com very high marks."

You even save on sales tax (not for long though if the goverment has its way). You can find the Panasonic DMR E85 DVD recorder at Amazon by clicking on the image:
